I've recently stumbled upon a wonderful Mommy blog called "Mumma's Corner", and wanted to highlight a particular guest post containing an super simple seven minute meditation by Kayma Englund. I FINALLY took the time to try it this morning while Foster jabbered away to his little friends in his crib. While I did actually sit up (this can be done lying down as well), I didn't even get out of bed before taking these few minutes for myself. Yup, truly there is nothing like taking a a few peaceful moments to start the day. Plus this simple guided meditation makes it EASYAS PIE...
I have long been telling myself to establish a better meditation routine. I have had relative success with it before and certainly can attest to the benefits of taking the time in stillness and silence. Who wouldn't enjoy having a calmer and clearer mind, an increase in patience, love and compassion, and an overall greater sense of connection and well being, (just to name a few "perks"...). Despite this known fact, obviously the practice has not exactly stuck and time and time again I find myself vowing to "start over"... Of course part of the process has been accepting this as OK btw :) We will ALWAYS be able to find excuses, there will always be distractions etc. etc.... The "why" boils down to human nature. Yes friends, it's simply "how we roll..."
That said, even taking time out for "mini meditations"throughout the day, in particular when we notice ourselves feeling overwhelmed, anxious or stressed, can have great benefits as well. All this requires is taking a moment to be still and observe our inhales and exhales without judgment, even if only for a few conscious breaths. This also means observing thoughts as they come, acknowledging and accepting as "thinking" and then releasing them, remembering that these thoughts DO NOT DEFINE us. This practice bring awareness to those thought patterns, as well as an awareness of how we tend to make up stories to go along with them. We also may begin to recognize the body's response to stressful situations (ie tension in the face, jaw and shoulders... bum cheeks... seriously!) as well as how focusing on releasing this tension with the breath will automatically begin to calm and clear the mind....
All great stuff you will experience in this simple meditation I speak of :)
There was plenty I loved about this meditation in general, including the fact that much of it was similar to that which I enjoy sharing in class. It always feels good to find yourself receptive and positive about something only to have the realization it in fact sounds familiar for a reason. I feel blessed to add Kayma to my list of wonderful teachers and hope she does not mind if I add some of her imagery to my teacher/student toolbox.
So.....
You'll find the link to the audio file at the end. Check it out and more importantly TRY IT OUT. You can certainly try this at any time of day although mornings are fantastic as you'll likely find your mind is already a little quieter when you first wake.
Also, more than once a day certainly won't hurt.... I'm pretty sure it's impossible to OD on meditation ;)
I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences too btw.
Here's to taking a few moments for mommi...
Namaste :)
